You could have a film that is bracingly inventive in its visual approach but falls flat in the narrative drama. Ditto the reverse, a visually flat film with a well-realized narrative. “You want my honest-to-God’s opinion on Netflix buying TIFF 2020 selection “Concrete Cowboy”? The Idris Elba-starring movie sure as hell isn’t an Oscar contender. There was just no way that director Patty Jenkins’ DC tentpole would be skipping its theatrical release, given it’s a tentpole movie which was made very much with the intention of being seen in packed houses on the largest screen possible. However, the inevitability of other releases skipping theatrical and going straight to VOD is very much there. IMDB is now listing the film as having a November 26th, 2021 release date in the United States, U.K. and Canada. That is not surprising news at all since production had officially wrapped in late November on PTA’s ninth feature film. The editing process must be going smoothly and now we are left to speculate if a Cannes premiere is in the works (that is if the festival even occurs this coming July)....

Regardless of that, I believe that Green Book’s chances don’t lie in Op-Ed think-pieces about the Viggo controversy, but rather in how audiences will greet it this weekend and beyond, especially when word of mouth hits.
