On a weekend evening, Kris leads her crew into breaking into the house of African-American neighbor Abe (Rob Morgan) and using his alcohol stash to party until the break of dawn. The morning after, a drunk and bewildered Kris forgets to go back home, and instead sleeps on the back porch of Abe’s house, leading to trouble upon his return home. The cops are called, and Kris, in a move of sheer desperation, and not wanting to follow in her mother’s footsteps, accepts a plea instead of being brought to court: she will help Abe with errands around the house for an undetermined period of time....

Filled with hit and miss jokes, season nine was the first time ‘Curb’ showed signs of rust in its episodes. After its debut in the early aughts, the highly improvised ‘Curb’ will be entering its 10th season of tongue-in-cheek and politically incorrect humor on HBO....

Reviews have come out and they are universally positive. An 80 on Metacritic and a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, what gives? If the movie is that good then you’d think the WB team would be thrilled to let me watch this film. Alas, after three email requests for a screener, nada. I seem to have been ghosted. Something tells me it has to do with my tendency to not like anything Manuel-Miranda does, but who knows....

The film continues 18 years later, with Diane living at home with her homeschooled and wheelchair-bound eighteen-year-old daughter, Chloe (Kiera Allen). How did the newborn from the first scene not only survive, but also manage to become such an impressive young college-bound woman?...

The UK numbers ($7.1M) are quite something, especially when you realize that this was accomplished during a pandemic — in comparison, “Inception” opened to 9M in the UK, Interstellar 8M, and Dunkirk 13M. You can also expect it to have long-running legs as more and more people start to feel comfortable going back to the cinema in the weeks and months to come. According to Deadline, close to 40 offshore markets have released “Tenet” this past week/weekend....

You see where I’m getting at here? With “First Reformed” and “The Card Counter,” Schrader may very well be building up a Bressonian trilogy (his next film still hasn’t been announced, but I bet it’ll again find inspiration in the legendary French director ). Oscar Isaac, as always, nails the role of William Tell, a gambler and former serviceman who sets out to reform a young man (Tye Sheridan) seeking revenge on a mutual enemy from their past....

The film, more relevant today than it has ever been, played around with the notion that what one hears could ultimately turn out to be quite different than what is actually occurring. However, more importantly, in the age of the post-9/11 “surveillance state,” Coppola’s film now plays as a prophetic statement on citizens losing their own privacy, succumbing to extraordinary forces beyond their control by adhering to the lawlessness of higher powers....

The current projection is that it will make around $4-5 million this coming weekend. Those are not terrible numbers considering it’s playing in just 600 theaters, but Spielberg used to be a much bigger draw … Still, “The Fabelmans” will probably end up being the only fall prestige film to get $10+ million in the US, which kind of makes it a de facto success? “The Fabelmans” was never a commercially viable concept, it was inevitably going to have a hard time making its money back....
