Are you worried that soap operas are going to die out and they will be a memory of the past? It’s a valid concern – especially with the rise of the internet where there is so much modern media that makes it hard to compete for traditional shows.  In this article, we will examine the state of the soap opera industry and where it might go in the future. You’ll see that it’s not all doom and gloom for the industry but the golden years have certainly gone. Keep in mind that this article is partly speculation and nobody knows what the future holds.  You Can Watch New Soap Operas Today The soap opera industry is not dead today because you can still watch new episodes. Shows such as General Hospital, Days of our Life, and The Young and Restless are still airing episodes. The shows are popular and there is a demand for the media content.  They are unlikely to stop in the near future because they have been around for decades. Look at the history of soap operas and you’ll see that they don’t suddenly stop. It’s possible that some of these soap operas will continue to release episodes for another decade or two.  However, will new soap operas be created? It’s a question we will consider in the next section.  Will the Soap Opera Genre Release New Shows? It has been a long time since a successful new soap opera was launched. The genre does not have the same level of demand as before. Some say it’s because there are fewer traditional housewives, which stereotypically are the number one viewers of soap operas. The rise of feminism and lack of single working parent households means most mothers work too. The reduction in audience numbers means that it’s not as lucrative to create such shows.  However, once a few more soap operas end the public may speak out and show an interest in watching a new soap opera. A brave TV production company will need to take a chance and create storylines that modern audiences will enjoy.  Modern Soap Opera Audiences Have Shrunk The decades before the internet there were fewer forms of entertainment and not as much media to consume. Nowadays, kids are turning to YouTube instead of TV to consume media. It’s hard for soap operas to compete with so much media out there that often provides a more modern touch.  However, soap operas are not dead because there are still successful shows running with a loyal audience. Visit Facebook groups and forums of these shows and you’ll see that a lot of discussion is taking place. The constantly evolving storylines mean that there is something fresh to enjoy with every season.  It’s one of the reasons why soap operas can captive audiences for so long. The characters are so deep with a history that watching them becomes part of life. As the characters grow they feel like part of the family since they have been around for so long.  Soap Operas Need to Embrace Modern Media You don’t often see soap operas airing on YouTube or other modern media channels and that’s the problem. They need to embrace modern media by showing their episodes where people nowadays gather. Furthermore, the storylines need to reflect what is happening around us today and not in previous decades. Staying up to date with current events allows new people to start watching soap operas.  Also bringing in popular celebrity actors for small roles will boost soap operas. Top movie actors can boost the ratings of a show. Cameo roles are popular in soap operas and now they are more needed than ever before. Also, consider the role of online marketing. Movies that come out are blasted all over the internet, but the same is not true for soap operas. Switching to online marketing may educate the younger generation on the attraction of soap operas, which could lead to a rise in popularity.  Final Thoughts To summarize, soap operas are declining, but there are a few good shows left. These shows may continue for decades to come or we may see new ones take their place.
