I am so utterly disappointed by my lack of enthusiasm for this film, which was my most anticipated of 2020, that I am willing to give it another shot, a fourth viewing, in the coming week. Fincher is such a great visualist, and his peering inside the mind of the genius Herman Mankiewicz —filled with innumerable alcoholic blackouts and illuminating discoveries— feels so out of step with 2020, but something tells me it’ll play better over time....
The film has Orna (Liron Ben Shlush) having to deal with her boss Benny (Menashe Noy). who is clingingly too intimate whenever he approaches her at the office. Alarm bells are set, especially when Benny asks her to wear her hair down and buy more sophisticated clothes. Orna’s discomfort and imprisoning feeling is only enhanced by the fact that she has three kids to take a care of and a husband, Ofer (Oshri Cohen), who has opened an unsuccessful restaurant in Tel Aviv....
Curie is the famous scientist that discovered radium and polonium, she’s highly regarded as one of the most important scientists of the 20th century. The film doesn’t only delve into her landmark discovery, but also tackles how it was to be scientist during a time when women weren’t necessarily respected in the field. It’s all laid down a little too thickly for my liking, but the film has its fans....
The projections tell us it will likely end its run with an ultimate domestic run of $775 million — this would ultimately make it surpass “Avatar’s” $760 million in third place at the all-time box-office charts. No Way Home’s extraordinary box-office success happened during a pandemic, and a time when most people were predicting the worst impending death of moviegoing. This spells good fate for the future of big-budget blockbusters, the 18-29 crowd will always want to shell out their hard-earned dough for the next superhero epic, but as far as the mid-budget adult drama goes?...
Oh, and there were reshoots last month as well. Unsurprisingly, “The Batman” has had its release date go from its original December 2020 launch to June 25, 2021 and now to March 4, 2022 ( which would 27 months after production began on the film). Reeves’ movie was test screened at the Warner Bros studio lot on Friday and rumors are now pointing towards a 3-hour runtime for “The Batman....
Not to carp on about it, but the new wave of indie arthouse horror, but has really tapped into something primal in our culture. Using formal rigor and a kind of patience that’s the opposite of jump scares, this new movement is bound by its collective desire to use atmospherics to unsettle us emotionally and psychological on a much deeper level. It’s a different kind of fear and one not traditionally scary in the boo!...
Diao’s Chinese noir begins on a rainy night, in a remote outdoor location filled with bright neon lights (think, the look and feel of a Nicolas Winding Refn movie). The empty streets are a chance for a meeting between a beautiful woman and a mysterious man with a bloody cut on his face. He’s Zhou Zenong (Hu Ge), a mob boss on the run from the cops and a local gangster chapter; she’s Liu Aiai (Gwei Lun-me), a chain-smoking femme fatale/prostitute with a complicated backstory....
That’s two BIG American blockbusters right there. What else might show up? I’m tempted to believe that, given the French affinity for Jordan Peele’s first two films, maybe “Nope” could have a Cannes debut as well. However, I haven’t heard anything that would have me betting on this occurring just yet. Then there’s the curious story of George Miller’s “Three-Thousand Years of Longing.” Miller’s film is said to be incredibly arthouse, but I’ve been hearing mixed reactions on it so far....

Her family seems to think they had an intense bond, but, to him, it was nothing more than a Tinder fling. Ben decides to make a podcast out of the eccentric characters he meets in this murder-mystery. In turn, “Vengeance” turns into a sort of live-action version of a podcast. To say more about the plot would ruin some of the surprises in store for the audience. That’s the gist of Novak’s directorial debut, “Vengeance,” a fine-as-it-goes detective story that tackles the media, American polarization and the opioid crisis....

The film told the story of the early days of Facebook and its creator Mark Zuckerberg, it ended with Zuckerberg being scolded by Rashida Jones’ lawyer and, ironically, friendless, despite inventing a cyber world built upon the idea of “friendship.” Recently, Zuckerberg has been indebted in a sea of controversy concerning his actions as CEO of Facebook. Evidence has been uncovered that Zuckerberg sold people’s personal data, letting advertisers target you based on your interests....

This will be Waters’ first film in almost two decades. His last creation was 2004’s “ A Dirty Shame.” Waters is the iconoclast filmmaker behind “Pink Flamingos,” “Polyester,” “Serial Mom,” and “Hair.” “Liarmouth,” based on Waters’ own novel, follows con artist Marsha Sprinkle, who is described as “a suitcase thief, scammer, and master of disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder....

It’s more of a memory thing than any kind of story. Clayton Davis lives in his own world. He likes to create his own Oscar-race narratives, purely based on his own tastes. That’s not how it works. Minari was not screened at TIFF or NYFF, nor was it part of Telluride’s lineup....
