The main character is inspired by one chapter of french author Boris Razon’s novel “Écoute” (“listen”) and concerns a drug kingpin who disappeared, after changing identity, by undergoing a male-to-female surgical transition. Audiard co-wrote the movie with his usual writing partner Thomas Bidegain. They will partner with French composer-arranger Clément Ducol for the score and famous French singer Camille, who wrote all the songs (with the help of a Mexican translator) and performed them for the music demo....

French journalist Bernard Montiel revealed last night that Depp and Maïwenn have not been getting along at all during the shoot of “La Favorite”. Montiel revealed there was tension for months between the two. Supposedly, Maïwenn has been none-too-impressed by Depp’s punctuality. AppleTV+ and Martin Scorsese are teaming up for the upcoming movie, which Paramount is still set to distribute. Supposedly, the budget on ‘Killers’ had inflated to a worrisome $225M and started to get Paramount a little too nervous about its commercial prospects by shelling out money for such a risky endeavor. The troubled post-production on the film resulted in Scorsese reaching out to countless studios including Netflix, Universal, and MGM....

Here was a cult director who was also a huge movie fan, we could talk for days about the same film. Hellman had a colorful career in different parts of the industry; directing TV movies for Roger Corman in the ‘50s, kickstarting a young Jack Nicholson’s career in the early ‘60s, and even doing second-unit work on Verheoven’s “RoboCop” However, It was 1971’s “Two-Lane Blacktop,” starring James Taylor and Dennis Wilson, that will forever be synonymous with Hellman’s name and legacy, as that film’s reputation has grown over the years....

The film had its North American premiere a week ago at the New York Film Festival and during the post-screening Q&A conducted by Emily Mortimer, the actress revealed that she was collaborating with Baumbach on his next film. No further details were given. I assume that Netflix might not be backing this next project. “White Noise” had a budget balloon to more than $100 million and it doesn’t look like the film will be up for any awards given the inaccessibility of the material and the not-so-enthusiastic reviews....

Nevertheless, the lack of “Hollywood” movies in competition has rather irked the likes of Variety and THR, with the latter confessing that “Cannes, once the undisputed heavyweight champion of international film festivals, has been on the ropes of late.” All of this despite the fact that Jarmusch, Malick, Sachs, and most likely Tarantino, will all be in competition this year at the fest. I wrote in my review: “It’s all led by Duke and, especially, Nyong’o’s performances. The latter, an actress of considerably imposing talent, inflicts a real sense of haunting into Peele’s frames. Much like his main character in “Get Out,” Peele’s camera deep focuses on his lead’s eyes every chance he gets. And what eyes! Aided by cinematographer Mike Gioulakis, Peele gives his film a surreal and nightmarish look with pertinently memorable frames unveiled every few minutes....

First things first, “Drive My Car,” which was the surprise Best Film winner, barely edged out Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog.” There was debate about rewarding Campion’s film, but the voting body ended up settling on Hamaguchi’s film. Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” finished a distanced third. According to my sources, nothing else came close to winning. “The Souvenir Part II” was another film some members were passionate about....

Don’t tell me it’s “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” That film’s hardcore fanbase keeps pushing the idea that it’ll win Best Picture, but I just can’t see it happening. The Academy rarely recognizes sci-fi and the film is polarizing enough to turn off older voters. If it were released just a decade ago, I don’t even think it would have been nominated, but a lot has changed since then. How about “Top Gun: Maverick,” which would be another unusual winner as it’s a straight-up action blockbuster....

Yesterday, on a FB thread, which actually started with a discussion of my mid-year critics poll and its winner, Jordan Peele’s latest film “Us,” Schrader decided to reply to a comment about Peele’s film being an “obvious homage to Brian De Palma.” I didn’t expect Schrader to shred fellow 70’s maverick De Palma on his page, but he did, calling De Palma a “trite” and “artistically weak” artist. Yikes. “Don’t get me started on Brian DP,” Schrader said....

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast this past week, Howard looked back on ‘Solo’ movie and the mixed reception, both at the box office and with fans. Howard is a fan of the film he made and believes trolls destroyed its reputation: Howard also claims that many supposed Star Wars fans are nothing more than ‘tagalongs,’ waiting to see what the zeitgeist says before having an actual opinion on the movies: “I’m proud of #SoloAStarWarsStory and the cast & crew worked hard to give fans a fun new addition,” he tweeted when a fan asked if the backlash that stemmed from “The last Jedi” was partially to blame for the tepid numbers of “Solo” at the box-office....
