McKay’s film has started screening for a select few these last few days. Critics were mostly positive on “The Big Short,” but reviews were mixed for McKay’s rather excellent Dick Cheney smackdown “Vice.” That film seemed to have the bad omen of being released during the Trump years when Cheney’s evil-doing took a backseat and all of the attention was zeroed in on the mean-tweeting 45th President. “Don’t Look Up” comes to us as the trailers and clips that have been released from Netflix were not very well-liked....

Reactions are all over the place with this one. I like how it refuses to really set-up any kind of plot, the best I can say about this one is that it looks well-shot, well-photographed and … unique. Also, how is Drake producing this? The test-screenings for “Amsterdam” did not go well. If you read this site regularly then you know that. These are well-armed women — a biologist played by Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh’s psychologist, Tessa Thompson’s biologist, paramedic Gina Rodriguez and Tuva Novotny’s M.D — but they seem rather ill equipped and under-trained to enter this realm of the unknown. The goal as you might imagine is rather obvious, try to to figure out the root of it all which seems to be coming from a lighthouse that is around a week away by foot....

It was inevitable, but the amount of hate I’ve read today concerning “Blonde” is quite unique. It’s as if critics, journalists and audiences have finally united, for once, to beat up on a movie they commonly despise. It’s pretty low how The Independent has decided to write in their headline that Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde” has “viewers turning off ‘unwatchable’ Marilyn Monroe drama after just 20 minutes.” This stems from two tweets they found on social media stating that they turned off the film “after 20 minutes....

“Fast 9” has had its release date pushed back by a year to an April 2021 release. Yikes. Universal Studios, the company behind the “Fast & Furious” franchise, made the decision because of the fast-moving coronavirus. There’s also a mounting and dreading sense that U.S. theaters will start to close very soon due to the outbreak, especially if, as many experts have predicted, it continues to spread. Vin Diesel made the announcement on social media....

“Feels Good Man,” which I saw at Sundance 2020, has Furie, who was a non-political underground cartoonist, being immersed through a hellish legal battle for the soul of his animated character. The problem is that when millions on the Internet take an image and make it their own, good luck getting it back. Either you go along with ‘Gucci,’ knowing full well that you’re watching a 164 minute farce or you don’t go along with its semi-unintentional camp. It’s as simple as that. “Judas and the Black Messiah“ tells the true story of how car thief-turned-FBI informant William O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield) infiltrated the Black Panther Party and helped the feds take down Panther leader Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya). If you’ve seen the trailer, you can already sense some major ’70s American cinema vibes going for it. It turns out, Sidney Lumet’s shadow looms large in ‘Judas,’ a muscular, if messily disjointed, jaunt into gritty crime territory from director Shaka King —whose only other directing credit was the middling 2013 indie, “Newlyweeds....

And so, “Kajillionaire,” has the uber-talented writer-director of “Me, You and Everyone We Know” tackling the Dyne clan, a husband-wife-daughter team of criminals forging petty crimes in Los Angeles. These eccentric neurotics embrace the dream of someday becoming “Kajillionaires.” The Dynes are Robert, Theresa (Richard Jenkins and Debra Winger), and their 26-year-old daughter Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood). They dress like shlubs, in oversized thrift shop-like clothes, whilst their daughter Old Dolio (I know, that name) lacks the emotional development and quite frankly, maturity, to make it in the real world....

Thus, the film’s fate resides on the chemistry between its two leads, and on that front, “Long Shot” is succesful. After all, if you can suspend your disbelief of the political world the film portrays, in which, as Charlotte says, there is a “dumbfuck” president in the White House (“Better Call Saul” actor Bob Odenkirk) who wants to trade the presidency for a movie career, then you’re all set-up for what is, in essence, a very entertaining movie....

It is now being reported that ‘Furiosa’ is set to start filming in mid-March and wrap in June. That means a lengthy 3.5 month shoot for the film. Taking on Charlize Theron’s role of Furiosa will be Anya Taylor-Joy. Joining her in the cast will be Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in unspecified roles. Details about the plot are still unknown, but this ‘Furiosa’ prequel will focus on the early days of the character, and how she grew to be the war captain under Immortan Joe....

According to TMZ, Marshall passed away in her Hollywood home on Monday night due to complications from diabetes. She had been battling various health issues over the years, including a 2009 bout with lung cancer which spread to her brain. Yes, we know Marshall as Laverne DeFazio on the TV classic “Laverne & Shirley,’’ however I truly believe she had the kind of trailblazing impact on American cinema that not many seemed to be aware of....

Starring the great Natasha Lyonne (“Orange Is The New Black” “American Pie”), the film takes place in the underground world of New York City, and because of that it is clearly inspired by Scorsese’s ‘After Hours,” in its capturing of a city that never sleeps and only gets weirder and dicier by the hour. Lyonne’s Nadia, a self-described “ill-mannered combination of Andrew Dice Clay and the animated redheaded heroine from “Brave,” is an acerbic, chain-smoking software designer - Lyonne almost plays it like she is channeling Peter Falk, carrying the story from beginning to end detective-like workmanship....

“Saint Frances" is the story of Northwestern dropout Bridget (Kelly O’Sullivan), a 34-year-old Chicago waitress (she actually prefers to be called a “server”) who hits a snag in life and goes through a millennial identity crisis. When we are first introduced to Bridget she ends up hooking up with 26-year-old Jace (Max Lipchitz) at a party. Next thing you know, they are living together. But deep beneath Bridget is a sense of isolation and an urge to break free and to find herself....

“Doctor Sleep,” the sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining,” was projected to open with a $25-30 million tally this past weekend at the box-office. That didn’t happen. In fact, the Veterans Day box office became a bloody metaphor for the vast indifference many audiences have had with sequels this year. As winter starts to creep into the Northeast, in the form of snowstorms and chilly weather, more and more people may rather stay home and stream Netflix content than go to the movies and watch another irrelevant sequel we didn’t need....

A major development has occurred since then. The film’s director, Jeff Fowler, has announced [via Twitter] that he will be re-designing Sonic’s look from scratch. The film is supposed to be released in November. That gives Fowler and Paramount 7 months to finish this thing up. Good luck. The intense outrage over the trailer was nasty. Paramount and Sega are clearly scrambling to save the film at this point with their idea for a total redesign....
