Magnus von Horn’s new film, “Sweat” tells the story of a popular fitness influencer with more than 600,000 followers on social media, who hides behind a facade. Taking place during just a few days in her every-so-busy life, we see her having to deal with a potential stalker, endless online rumors, and the major stresses that come with the “profession” she’s chosen. One look at the just-released trailer reveals von Horn’s refusal to ridicule or thinly-sketch his lead protagonist....

On one side of the aisle were rambunctious, frizzy-haired Jerry Rubin (Jeremy Strong) and Abbie Hoffman (Sacha Baron Cohen), and on the other, a more pragmatic, moderate-minded activist by the name of Tom Hayden (Eddie Redmayne). Their attorney William Kuntsler (Mark Rylance), a left-wing ideologue in his own right, but a follower of the law who understood the conformity needed to get these rebellious activists out of jail. In the middle of the whole saga, Black Panther leader Bobby Seale (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) who refused Kuntlser’s legal services and decided to defend himself in court after his own lawyer got hospitalized....

Ostlund, who won the Palme d’Or with his last film “The Square” in 2017, wrapped shooting his ambitious satire “Triangle of Sadness” in 2019. Now comes word that he’s currently working on trimming a three-hour cut of the film. ”Triangle of Sadness” is said to be a dark comedy centering on a fashion model celebrity couple who are invited on a luxury cruise for the super-rich. The yacht –whose captain is a rabid Marxist– sinks, leaving the duo stranded on a desert island in Greece with a group of billionaire jetsetters and a cleaning lady....

Now, much like every movie year, there was speculation that Le Clint is already set to direct a new movie, which could potentially be released by the end of the year. This would be his 36th film as a director. The man is a beast. Well, according to Variety, Sam Rockwell will star in Clint Eastwood’s upcoming film “The Ballad of Richard Jewell.” The film will the true story of Richard Jewell, a security guard during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games that discovered a bomb and tried to warn people before it exploded....

“The matter was the hot topic of discussion at an April 11 meeting at Academy headquarters,” THR reports. In attendance were “several dozen publicists who work on Oscar campaigns each year.” The thought of an “Academy app” had surfaced a few years ago when Hollywood-Elsewhere’s Jeffrey Wells had reported that the academy were working on an app that would allow AMPAS votersto watch all the films in awards contention in high-def — a genius plan that would stop the leaking of screeners on piracy sites....

You’re probably asking yourself, “Spiderhead? Is that a Spider-Man spinoff?” No, there’s an action movie called “Spiderhead” being released next Friday on Netflix. Its budget is said to be $100+ million, but almost nobody has heard about it. A trailer was finally released around three weeks ago to little or no interest. This all strikes me as a bit odd since “Spiderhead” stars the mega-popular Chris Hemsworth and is directed by “Top Gun: Maverick” helmer Joseph Kosinski....

Appearing on an episode of the “Jemele Hill Is Unbothered” podcast, Jenkins recalls the terrifying experience of having to deal with accepting the Oscar after the ‘La La’ blunder. However, more intriguingly, is Jenkins’ biggest issue with the gaffe, that it kickstarted the narrative that “Moonlight” only won Best Picture because the Academy wanted to honor a Black film. “In a slightly sinister way, the fuck-up confirms or affirms some people’s unsavory thoughts about why the film was awarded Best Picture,” the filmmaker said....

Whether the Berlinale actually sticks with its February dates is something that’s still up in the air, but its organizers are said to be very adamant at making the show go on as planned. The fest doesn’t greet as many international tourists as, say, Cannes or Toronto and can more flexibly adhere to whatever the COVID rules on moviegoing might be come February. As for the actual lineup, I don’t have as many spies within the Berlinale as I do at Cannes or Venice, so it is a much more daunting task for me to predict what will play this festival....

Lionsgate’s Gerard Butler led action flick, which reunited the Scotsman with Morgan Freeman’s ‘President Trumbull’ for a third go round on the rollercoaster of action opened to a solid $21.25M, delivering not only the fourth top opening weekend of Butler’s career, but also the franchise’s first number 1 slot, even though it fell just over $8M shy of the original film (‘Olympus Has Fallen’) and its $30M opening. This could extend a possible lifeline to a franchise that could have been set to end if this film had under-performed....

In fact, its $55M second weekend, is the largest October has ever seen, beating out Alfonso Cuaron’s Oscar-winning ‘Gravity’ and its $43.2M haul in 2013. The world’s most talked-about movie at the moment also drew in around $123.7M internationally, pushing it near $550M worldwide after 12 days, and now possibly with its sights set on Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Deadpool’ and its global R-rated record of $783M. The first of this weekend’s three newcomers that have fallen victim to the juggernaut that is ‘Joker’ is UAR’s animated take on classic comedy, ‘The Addams Family’....

“Nope” is projected to have a $17 million second-weekend gross . It’ll be at around $80 million domestically by Monday. These numbers are nowhere near “Us,” or “Get Out” levels (both films made $175 million each domestically). From my understanding, “Nope” will be available on VOD in less than a month’s time. That’s the deal Universal struck with theaters nationwide if Peele’s film had an opening of under $50 million, which it did....

The past year has been a rough, but rejuvenating one for the oldest and most prestigious film magazine in the world. Right as the pandemic was starting, back in March of 2020, their writing team quit due to new ownership. The new team has handled the changes admirably well. Regardless, after six months of absence, they reformed, some of the writers came back, others left for good, and have now managed to release their annual tradition of producing the most eclectic top 10 around....

Despite the “Official Selection,” there wasn’t a competition lineup announced, instead, Fremaux insisted that all 56 films selected would just have an equal badge of honor of being part of this year’s selection. A fun game to play, which I will continue to spitball/revise in the weeks to come since we will likely never know the full details of this year’s canceled Cannes 2020 competition, is to put together the 18-21 films that would have competed this year for the Palme d’Or....

Ever since being promoted as the director of the Cannes Film Festival, overseeing all artistic content presented at the prestigious annual fest, Cannes boss Thierry Frémaux hasn’t necessarily found that much new talent as much as continuing the traditions of this the greatest film festival in the world. Despite that, Frémaux’s 13-year tenure still includes many, now, renowned, directors having been discovered by his committee Frémaux’s mainstay at the festival has resulted in directors such as Cristi Mungiu, Celine Sciamma, Ruben Ostlund, Steve McQueen, Lazlo Nemes, Abderrahmane Sissako, and Kantemir Balagov being discovered....
