I’ve been seeing some big name directors, Cannes regulars, starting to shoot new works these last few weeks and months, with what I would assume is the intent of premiering them at Cannes. The UPDATED Cannes 2023 list I have so far includes potential new films by Wes Anderson, Woody Allen, Ari Aster, Jonathan Glazer, Todd Haynes, Alexander Payne, Paolo Sorrentino, Lynne Ramsay, Yorgos Lanthimos, Alice Rohrwacher, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Robin Campillo, Bruno Dumont, Abdherrane Sissako, Justine Triet, Bertrand Bonello, Mateo Garrone, Ken Loach, Maiwenn, Nani Moretti, Jeff Nichols, Aki Kaurismaki, Marco Bellocchio, Terrence Malick, Jessica Hausner, Sofia Coppola, Kirill Serebrennikov, Catherine Breillat and Michel Franco....

Her role is said to consist of mostly unused footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi and according to Fisher’s brother, Todd Fisher, Lucasfilm has a lot of leftover material to work with: “There’s a lot of minutes of footage,” Fisher told Good Morning America. “I don’t mean just outtakes. This is unused, new content that could be woven into the storyline. That’s what’s going to give everybody such a great kick....

The cast of Tenet,” set for release in 2020, includes the likes of John David Washington, Elizabeth Debicki, Robert Pattinson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Kenneth Branagh and, of course, Nolan regular Michael Caine....

Two time Oscar winner De Niro, one of the greatest actors who ever lived, and the very talented John Malkovich were potentially duped into making this movie? or the paycheck was too large to ignore. Regardless, it’s such a peculiar decision on their part to sign up for this one. Directed by Randall Emmett, this is the kind of project that Bruce Willis and John Travolta now star in on a yearly basis....

It’s been six years since Fincher released his last feature, “Gone Girl.” The wait for a new film by the venerable director is finally over, as Fincher is about to release “Mank,” the forthcoming Netflix feature about “Citizen Kane” co-screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz. Gary Oldman is set to play the legendary screenwriter. On a recent appearance in the Pardon My Take podcast, “Mank” screenwriter Eric Roth stated that Fincher has “made a black and white ‘30s movie, it’s really incredible to see what he’s done....

The truth is, nobody really knows what’s going on with “The Killer”, not even Netflix (who had no further comment when emailed). They’re just letting Fincher take his time and maybe Cannes could be an option. With that being said, it sure looks as though the odds are that we’ll be seeing Fincher’s latest during the first or second quarter of 2023. Fincher was also said to have a 3-hour cut of the film, but one look at its Wikipedia page and it says 158 minutes....

The 73-year-old Woo, a director whose iconic style changed how action was shot in the ‘90s, mentioned in his speech that he was primarily concerned about the way Marvel movies may shelter young moviegoers into a corner and prevent them from learning about real cinema, like the films of Stanley Kubrick: “I’m concerned about when these [Marvel] movies get more and more popular, I’m afraid it will make young audiences get lost when it comes to knowledge about film,” he said, adding that Marvel movies have become the standard for younger movie audiences and that they may end up not wanting to study or watch “real cinema” such as Lawrence of Arabia, Mean Streets, A Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey....

Why is it so hard for Vulture’s Sam Sanders to admit that “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” just isn’t that good? Fact of the matter is that this MCU sequel makes 2018’s “Black Panther” look like second coming. There’s nothing wrong in saying that, and the fact that a film writer finds it so hard to admit that a Marvel movie isn’t good is downright disturbing. Hell, “Black Panther” wasn’t even that impressive to begin with, but not many wanted to admit it four years ago....

After winning three consecutive Oscars for Best Cinematography, thanks to his work on 2013’s “Gravity,” 2014’s “Birdman,” and 201’5’s “The Revenant,” the man they like to call “Chivo” has worked on only one movie, 2017’s “Song to Song,” in the last 6 years. However, Lubezki’s impact on the world of film is singular, especially his work with Alfonso Cuaron (“Y Tu Mama Tambien” and “Children of Men”) and Terrence Malick (“The New World,” and “The Tree of Life”)....

It only took a few hours for Edelstein’s world to come crashing down in front of his very eyes. He had quickly deleted and apologized for the post, mostly due to angry commenters, but it was too little too late for the veteran film critic. Soon after, he was sacked from his job on NPR’s “Fresh Air.” He was also disinvited from moderating a q&a discussion with “Private Life” director Tamara Jenkins during a mid-day press luncheon....

In the last 72 hours, Venice has made a major push to snatch away some potential Cannes titles. It’s a bloodbath right now. The lineup hasn’t even be finalized. Also, Ira Sachs is the great director I was referring to earlier in the week. He originally wasn’t sure “Passages” was going to be ready on time for Cannes, but who are we kidding here? Hotshot producer Said Ben Said is behind this project and he’s all about Cannes....

Eric Gravel’s “Full Time,” Lise Asoka and Romane Gueret‘s “The Worst Ones,” Alice Wincour’s “Paris Memories,” Alice Diop’s “Saint Omer,” and Mia Hansen-Love’s “One Fine Morning.” A few surprising omissions: Rebecca Zlotowski’s “Other People’s Children,” and Dominik Moll’s “La Nuit Du 12.” Romain Gavras’ “Athena” was not eligible since it is a Netflix production and won’t be released in French theaters. Otherwise, that could have been a major contender. The final selection will be announced on September 23rd....

The film has an all-star tech team behind it including cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and composer Alexandre Desplat. Not to mention none other than Noah Baumbach co-writing the screenplay with Gerwig. “Barbie” is a $100 million risk. I mean, Amy Schumer, of all people, dropped out because of her “busy schedule.” Gerwig took over, penned the screenplay with partner Baumbach, and cast Margot Robbie/Ryan Gosling in the lead roles. The fact that they are testing this movie so early — it has a summer release date — means Warner Bros probably want to know what the hell they have here....

Michael is set to play his dad’s legendary role in The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel to The Sopranos which will be directed by Alan Taylor. You might be asking yourself, does the kid even act? Why, of course. James recently had a breakout turn on HBO’s “The Deuce.” I can vouch for his acting abilities, as he was, quite frankly, impressive on that show. Also, his resemblance to his late father is uncanny....

It’s been a fairly limp summer movie season for Hollywood. What quality films has the industry actually had to show for so far? “Top Gun: Maverick”? That’s the best they can do? “Nope” is one of the hopeful titles that could redeem a summer filled with lazy sequels, reboots and remakes. However, there are other glimmers of hope. I enjoyed Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming “Elvis.” Maybe Taika Waititi can deliver the goods with “Thor: Love and Thunder”....

I’ve had a tumultuous history with Nolan’s sci-fi classic. When “Inception” was released in the summer of 2010, my initial viewing of the film was that of disappointment but also of sheer fascination. The film, at times, felt laborious. In brief, I enjoyed watching “Inception”: admired the filmmaking, the acting, the audacity but, at the same time, I didn’t think it was as “brilliant” as many claimed: It wasn’t “mindblowing”, it was just complex, which was a whole other thing....

No more Male and Female acting awards will be giving, instead we’re getting two Best Lead Performance trophies and two awards for Best Supporting Performance. As I stated a few weeks back, what the Spirits and Gothams did is only the beginning. This will eventually end with the Oscars going gender neutral, you can take it to the bank. LAFCA are basically virtual-signaling how boldly resistant they are to the patriarchal norms....

The film stars Timothee Chalamet and is said to be a survival tale set in the ‘80s with a rumoured Cannibalism component added in for good measure. Guadagnino triumphed at Sundance in 2017 with “Call Me By Your Name,” it was the film everyone was talking about during that incredible edition of the the Park City festival. Other noteworthy titles from Sundance 2017 include “Get Out,” “A Ghost Story,” “Mudbound,” “Columbus,” “Wind River,” and “Ingrid Goes West....

“The value of a film that is like a theme park film, for example, the Marvel pictures, where the theaters become amusement parks,” he explained. “That’s a different experience. It’s not cinema. It’s something else. Whether you go for it or not, it is something else. We shouldn’t be invaded by those movies.” He continued, “And so, that’s a big issue. And we need the theater owners to step up for that....

Scorsese claims that del Toro’s film received some kind of raw end of the deal with critics and at the box-office, stating that it has “a special power and resonance” which left him to “wonder if there has been a real appreciation of Guillermo’s accomplishment”. Fair enough. The reviews for “Nightmare Alley” were politely positive — a 69 on Metacritic, 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid audience score of 7....
