Laboeuf had taken some time off from acting after being criminally charged for misdemeanor battery and petty theft in September 2020. LaBeouf was then sued, in December of that year, by his ex-girlfriend Tahliah Debrett Barnett for sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress. LaBeouf is joining a “Megalopolis” cast that includes Adam Driver, Forest Whittaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne. The production is set to begin in November and run through March 2023....

Bong Joon-ho is the South Korean director that gave us“Snowpiercer,” “Okja,” and “The Host,” if that’s not enough to whet your appetite for “Parasite,” then I don’t know what will. You can expect this movie to have its world premiere at Cannes next month. Purely based on the visuals, “Parasite” look top-notch. And check out the just-released poster, wowza. Here’s what I had to say about it on 01.31.20: “Emerald Fennell’s debut feature, “Promising Young Woman” plays like a feminist “Death Wish.” This thought-provoking movie has been the talk of the town ever since its premiere last weekend. Carey Mulligan stars as Cassie a barista and med-school dropout, haunted by her best friend’s dorm-room rape and ensuing suicide. Cassie spends her evenings, however, in clubs and bars, exacting revenge on any man who dares go over the line with her....

Internationally the film also delivered, bringing in $43M from over 40 markets, and that is without the Japanese and Chinese markets where it is likely to hit in March. All in all, this gave the film, and the studio, a debut of over $100M worldwide, a feat that seemed impossible following the much-publicized re-design of Sonic himself and the two lackluster trailers. Dropping into second is last week’s leader “Birds of Prey”....

Witherspoon will be reprising her role as go-getter Tracy Flick in “Tracy Flick Can’t Win,” which will debut on Paramount’s streaming service, Paramount+. Payne will pen the film adaptation with Jim Taylor. Witherspoon’s best performance has always been Flick. She’s never done better work. Payne’s election political satire tackled topics that have, sadly, become all-too-relevant today. Payne‘s perfectly shaped black comedy had Reese Witherspoon‘s Flick as a female Richard Nixontype — resentful, craven....

Speaking on The Director’s Cut podcast, while discussing the film with Spike Lee, Scorsese further explained why the film’s only significant female characters is almost completely silent over the course of the epic saga. “I kept asking [writer] Steve Zaillian if we can layer her in the story,” the filmmaker said. “I decided that she doesn’t have to say anything. You see your father do something like that, I’m sorry… You see him crush the guy’s hand like that… other kids maybe, but this kid couldn’t take it....

Now, here’s a holiday weekend list: the best Christmas movies of the 21st century. I’m glad we’ll bypass the question as to whether or not “Die Hard” is a Christmas movie (it is). Since this is a 21st century list, Bruce Willis’ jolly actioneer doesn’t qualify. It’s only movies that came out after 2000 that count here. No classics such as “It’s A Wonderful Life,” “Home Alone,” “A Christmas Story,” and “The Shop Around the Corner....

The legendary ‘Cahiers’ has announced its 10 best movies of the decade. No surprise, if you’ve followed their tastes over the last decade, that David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return” tops their list. In fact, Lynch’s Showtime series isn’t the only TV show on their top 10 — Bruno Dumont’s “P’tit Quinquin” (#3) also aired on French television. Also, color me surprised, but they decided to choose Jean-Luc Godard’s “The Image Book” (#5) over his more critically-acclaimed “Goodbye to Language....

However, Nyong’o came out triumphant from the picture, so much so that we are still talking about her work in the film and how it may be compensated by an Oscar nom for Best Actress. At least that’s what various Gold Derby “experts” are predicting. At the moment, I am predicting Nyong’o to be shut out of a nomination. There are currently 4 sure-fire nominees in the Actress category: Renee Zellweger (Judy)Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story)Awkwafina (The Farewell)Charlize Theron (Bombshell) Nyong’o will have to fight for that fifth spot with Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart) and Cynthia Erivo (Harriet)....

“MGM retained the rights to the first movie, so they’re rebooting that,” said Mancini. “They asked [producer] David Kirschner and I if we wanted to be executive producers. We said no thank you, because we have our ongoing thriving business with Chucky. Obviously my feelings were hurt. Ya know, I had just done two movies… forgive me if I sound defensive, [they] were both at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even though they didn’t get theatrical releases, they were well regarded....

The first runner up was “One Night in Miami,” directed by Regina King. The second runner up was the Canadian film “Beans,” directed by Tracey Deer. The TIFF 2020 People’s Choice Documentary Award winner was “Inconvenient Indian,” directed by Michelle Latimer. The TIFF 2020 People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award winner turned out to be “Shadow in the Cloud,” directed by Roseanne Liang. Last year’s People’s Choice Award went to Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit,” which led to it getting nominated for Best Picture and winning the Best Adapted Screenplay category....

So it is no surprise that Cruise has called his good friend once again to do some on-set rewrites for the upcoming “Top Gun” sequel “Maverick.” The upcoming issue of Empire has confirmed that the Cruise/McQuarrie team are collaborating once again on “Top Gun: Maverick,” which is their 10th film together. Sources close to the production have said that McQuarrie has been on-set strictly for script work, but that the “heavy lifting” on the screenplay had already been done when McQuarrie came in....

EARLIER: There have been rumors that a new full-length trailer is ready to go for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” We already had a teaser released this past summer, but Nolan tends to release lengthier trailers in the month of December. What I can confirm is that the film is almost ready. Post-production editing on “Oppenheimer” wrapped last week, now they need to work on refining the VFX. There’s also, coincidentally, a Total Film cover story that is in newsstands next Thursday....

Nolan’s latest feature is titled “Tenet,” it stars Robert Pattinson and John David Washington and, rumor has it, has a plot revolving around a globe-trotting adventure in the same vein as Alfred Hitchock’s “North By Northwest.” Although, set for a summer 2020 release, “Tenet” is about to have an exclusive IMAX prologue that will likely be released before the end of the year. According to Trailer Track, the prologue will be released alongside the upcoming “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker....

In a way, the hate being directed at Zeller’s family drama is unwarranted, for 2/3 of the film you are mostly invested in the dynamics of this four-character piece. However, the ending irked me to no end and I think is probably the deal-breaker for much of the hate being spewed towards this film. Jackman is stellar, until he is not. The guy has charisma, but at the end of the day, when his acting chops are called to be stretched for a few emotional scenes, he kind of strikes out....
