That’s two BIG American blockbusters right there. What else might show up? I’m tempted to believe that, given the French affinity for Jordan Peele’s first two films, maybe “Nope” could have a Cannes debut as well. However, I haven’t heard anything that would have me betting on this occurring just yet. Then there’s the curious story of George Miller’s “Three-Thousand Years of Longing.” Miller’s film is said to be incredibly arthouse, but I’ve been hearing mixed reactions on it so far. If you remember, it test-screened in NYC very late last month. I’m sure Fremaux would, at the very least, offer Miller an OOC slot, but is the film good enough for competition? Right now, the US would — potentially — be represented in competition with screenings of James Gray’s “Armageddon Time,” and Kelly Reichardt’s “Showing Up.” A third American film in competition would definitely not be out of the realm of possibilities — it’s happened plenty times before in Cannes history.
